Yonkers police use new media to solve old cases
Old-fashioned police leg work and paper files help Yonkers Det. John Geiss, the cold case detective for the Yonkers Police Department, crack cases that date back years -- like the probe of alleged serial killer Lucius Crawford who was arrested in December.
But Geiss and his supervisor, Yonkers Det. Lt. Joseph Monaco -- who has been working with Geiss since January 2012 -- have employed new media as well in solving cold cases. Monaco, the lieutenant of the Yonkers Major Case Squad, and Geiss have been profiling cold cases monthly on the department's Facebook page and linking to the profiles from the department's Twitter account.
Geiss and Monaco look at the comments on the Facebook page to see who's interested in the cases they profile.
"That might be someone you want to talk to," Geiss said. "It's an amazing tool. All the social media sites can be a big help in any of these cases."
