David Burkhardt should ice his shoulders after carrying Mattituck to the state semifinals last night. Burkhardt had three goals and two assists, including one on the winning goal by Stephen Urwand with 7:04 left in the game to give Mattituck a 5-4 win over Spackenkill in a Class B Southeast Regional boys soccer final at Diamond in the Pines.

Mattituck (16-3-1) will play Livonia at 1:45 p.m. Saturday at Middletown High School in the state semifinals.

"I felt like this was my day," Burkhardt said. "I really wanted to make a mark on the game. Whatever I did today I am going to do before I go upstate."

On the game-winner, Burkhardt sent a cross to Urwand, who scored his second goal. "It was a great ball played in," Urwand said. "I saw the goalie far right and the left was open and I curved it in. We owe the win to Burkhardt."

Mattituck trailed 2-1 at the half before Burkhardt scored two straight. Spackenkill tied it at 3 and Burkhardt made it 4-3 with 16:50 left in the game but Spackenkill tied it 48 seconds later.

"I saw [Burkhardt] in the parking lot before the game.'' Mattituck coach Matt Litchhult said, "and told him this game was made for him."
