Dakota Edwards named NY Gatorade Player of Year
Sayville's Dakota Edwards was named the Gatorade New York Boys Soccer Player of the Year today. Edwards was Newsday's All-Long Island Player of the Year. The 6-2 senior defender had eight goals and 12 assists in leading Sayville to the Suffolk Class A finals one season after winning the state championship.
Edwards is also an All-American and was named the New York state Player of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Edwards will play at Maryland.
The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. Edwards is now a finalist for the Gatorade National Player of the Year that will be announced in May.
It is the second consecutive season a Long Island player has received the award. Tim Parker of Hicksville won it last season.
