Wantagh set for battle in tough league

Wantagh was one of the surprise teams last season by reaching the Nassau Class A finals before falling to South Side. It will only get more difficult in the very competitive Conference IV in which only four teams makes the playoffs.

Garden City, a worth playoff team, was left out last season and with South Side joining the conference this season, two good teams could be left out.

Wantagh graduated 18 seniors and returns just four starters. Wantagh will look to senior captains Jordan Zucker, Alec Chapoteau and junior Danny Lennon to lead the way.  Junior Ryan Berry also returns and the team adds junior goalkeeper Kevin Laibach and midfielder Matt Vaccaro to solidify the defense.  Sophomore Patrick Quigley and freshman Chris Taibi will be asked to provide an offensive spark.

“In a conference like this, I think a top four finish would be respectable for any team," Wantagh coach Tom Liguori said.  "For us, it’s a new team, a new season, and we’re certainly not trying to create a carbon copy of last year’s team.  We’re a different team and we have to write our own story.”
