Sayville's Dakota Edwards was named the Gatorade New York Boys Soccer Player of the Year today. Edwards was Newsday's All-Long Island Player of the Year. The 6-2 senior defender had eight goals and 12 assists in leading Sayville to the Suffolk Class A finals one season after winning the state championship.

The Portland Timbers selected former Brentwood soccer star Andrew Jean-Baptiste, Newsday’s 2009 Long Island Player of the Year, with the No. 8 pick in Wednesday’s Major League Soccer SuperDraft held in Kansas City.

Sayville's Dakota Edwards (above) was named the New York state Player of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
Edwards, Uniondale's Nyder Chardonnette and Hills West's Donovan Fraser were named NSCAA All-Americans. It was the second time Fraser was named an AA.

There were times during the regular season when a blowout win wasn’t considered good enough for the Port Jefferson boys soccer team. The heavily sophomore and junior-laden team would win a game by as many as four or five goals only to be told that they hadn’t played well enough.

One day after his birthday, Lucas Munoz celebrated in style. The Hicksville senior scored off a loose ball in front of the goal with 25:42 left in the game to give the Comets a 1-0 win over Webster Schroeder in the state Class AA finals at Middletown High School.

Wheatley had more and better scoring opportunities, but Broadalbin-Perth took advantage of one of its few to defeat Wheatley 1-0 in the state Class B finals at Middletown High School.

Jericho looks for its 10th consecutive win and a state championship finals berth as the Jayhawks take on East Syracuse-Minoa in a state Class A semifinal at Middletown High School.
