Port Jefferson rides second-half wind to LI C title
A strong wind stalled the Port Jefferson boys soccer team's offense in the first half of the Long Island Class C championship on Monday at Mitchell Field but propelled the Royals to four straight second-half goals en route to a 4-1 victory over Friends Academy.
Andrew Stingi put the Quakers (11-1-3) up 1-0 early in the first half and it was not until late in the half that the Royals began to gain the momentum. After getting the wind advantage in the second half, Port Jefferson (18-0) took control.
Vincent Antonelli tied the score with 21:32 remaining and Casey Abelein provided the go-ahead goal to push Port Jeff on to the Southeast Regional Final Tuesday at Diamond in the Pines.
