"We made the decision because of the pending storm and also because of the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy that is still affecting many of our schools," Section XI executive director Ed Cinelli said. "We're hoping to reschedule everything for [tomorrow]."
The cross country meet will not be rescheduled because the runners need to travel Thursday to Buffalo for Saturday's state meet. The county will select representatives for the states using merged results from the division championships held Oct. 23.
The top team in each class, as well as the top five runners not on the top team, will make the trip to states. Nassau County made a similar decision Monday after canceling last Saturday's county meet.
The Suffolk boys soccer playoffs were scheduled to begin Wednesday but have been postponed. The Suffolk Class AA first round will start Thursday and the championship will be Monday. The Class A first round will start Friday and the championship will be Monday. Class B and Class C will play the semifinals Thursday and the championship Saturday.
The Nassau boys soccer playoffs will begin Thursday with the Class AA and Class A quarterfinals and the Class B semifinals. The Class B championship will be Saturday. The Class AA and Class A finals will be Monday.
Wednesday's scheduled girls soccer playoff games have been postponed. At least one of the Class A semifinal matchups and the Class B county championship game originally scheduled for Thursday will be pushed back to a later date.
In volleyball, Suffolk girls playoffs were scheduled to begin Wednesday but also were postponed.
For Suffolk boys, a tentative schedule had first-round matches Thursday with county championships Saturday.
Nassau boys and girls playoffs will begin Thursday and the county championships will be Sunday. Long Island championships will be next week.
St. Anthony's coach Donna Newman said the CHSAA would determine its playoff schedule Wednesday and that the CHSAA state tournament has been moved from Saturday to Nov. 17 at St. Anthony's.
