Comsewogue beat Shoreham-Wading River. That’s no “OK, so?” statement. No, "Comsewogue beat Shoreham-Wading River" is Warriors history. That 1-0 victory Friday was Comsewogue’s first ever against the Wildcats, according to coach Nicole Kidd.

“I was just so proud of my team,” said Kidd, who has been with the program for 10 years. “They played so hard and so well. It was overwhelming. We finally saw what we’ve been telling them they’ve had for so long.”

That would be talent and an ability to rise to the occasion, as Karie Znaniecki did, scoring with 20:26 remaining for Comsewogue (5-4). It was the first Division III loss for the Wildcats (8-1), who are the four-time defending Suffolk Class B champs.

“There was some excitement – having a lead against Shoreham,” Kidd said of the feeling after the goal, “but it couldn’t last long because there was plenty of time left and they’re dangerous.”

The task of stifling a potential comeback was left to goalie Catie Moran (four saves) and the defense, in particular center backer Bryanna Bora and sweeper Stefani Vagelatos. The Warriors blanked the Shoreham superstars (Kaitlyn Taddeo and Debi-Michelle Jantzen), cleared 17 penalty corners, and withstood the late-game pressure. Pressure being that put on by the Wildcats, who threatened in the circle several times, and the tension that can creep in, given the magnitude of the situation.

“I can’t say enough about the defense,” Kidd said. “They faced all those corners and were getting the ball out of the circle… They were amazing; they played with heart.”

The Warriors had the weekend to bask in the victory, but they’ll have to refocus for this week, which will be a grind. They’ve got three road games, including a tough matchup with Miller Place on Wednesday.

“Hopefully having the taste of a big win will help them,” Kidd said. “I hope this finally gave us some confidence and the girls can ride that momentum.”
