High School Field Hockey

Newsday.com brings you in-depth coverage of Long Island high school field hockey.

Game of the Week -- Make that, the Season...

Call it, the Clash of the Titans...

On Monday, Garden City and Ward Melville -- the two best field hockey teams on Long Island -- will square off in East Setauket...Bragging rights are on the line for these two state champs...

Garden City has ruled the scene for years...The Trojans, winners of six state titles, 12 Long Island Championships, and 15 consecutive Nassau County titles since head coach Diane Chapman took over in 1991, have been the epitome of overall excellence.

And they'll continue to be the measuring stick for years to come...

Garden City is currently on a 29-game winning streak -- after going 21-0 last season en route to a 3-1 victory over Rondout Valley (IX) and the Class B state championship game. By the way, the Trojans also outscored their opponents 105-4 along the way.

Should Garden City outlast Ward Melville (8-0) tomorrow, it'll give the team a 9-0 start and Champman her 300th win...

But Ward Melville, the defending Class A champion, will be the Trojans' toughest opponent yet.

The Patriots finished the season 23-1 last year, after topping previously unbeaten Mamaroneck in the regional final, Greene in the state regional --and more importantly -- defending state champ Williamsville North.

Despite a 1-0 overtime loss to rival Smithtown East early in the season, Ward Melville quickly established itself as the team to beat in Suffolk. The bull's-eye grew with every passing game, and the Patriots wasted no time cementing their status as the best...

So who will win this epic battle?

Don't look at me, I have no clue.

Based on past success, it seems Garden City should be the clear favorite...But Ward Melville is psyched for this game...Just ask Patriots' midfielders Abby Beltrani and Georgia Holland, who happen to be good friends with Garden City's Eleni Andromidas, Newsday's 2008 Player of the Year...

As one GC parent put it: "Ward Melville is going nuts over this game."

The buzz is building...And Ward Melville is gunning for Garden City...

But then again, who wouldn't be?
