Trombetta named All-American
Sachem East midfielder Katie Trombetta was named a third-team All-American by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association, which released its selections today.
Trombetta, who last week had been selected to the NFHCA's All-Region team, led the Flaming Arrows to a Class A state championship last month and was among Long Island's top scorers with 28 points.
Going into the 2009 season, Sachem East coach Tina Moon spoke excitedly about an eighth-grader up from junior varsity whom she all but guaranteed would become an elite player in a few years. "She had the height, the speed, stick skills, good game sense, she was smart and picked things up quickly," Moon said. "She had everything you'd want in a young player." Add to it, Trombetta's mother, Patty, played Division I field hockey at Michigan and coached at Harborfields.
Katie sped up the process and "eventually" was almost immediate as she broke out as a freshman and was first-team All-Long Islander. She took another step this season, as a sophomore, again receiving Newsday All-LI honors, and she now has her name stamped on the sport's national map.
