Marist wins MAAC softball tournament championship
The Marist Red Foxes are MAAC softball tournament champions and headed to the NCAA regionals.
Danielle Koltz and Nicole Cheek homered for Marist, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament's host school, to lift the third-seeded Red Foxes to a 4-1 win over Fairfield, the No. 2 seed, in Saturday's championship game.
Marist pitcher Emily Osterhaus allowed one run on three hits over seven innings. She was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
“I'm kind of having an out-of-body experience right now, honestly,” Osterhaus told GoRedFoxes.com, Marist's athletics website, after the win. “The coolest feeling ever. … To actually win it on my field senior year with all my fans and parents here was outstanding.”
The victory capped a 3-0 weekend for Marist (30-24). The Red Foxes also defeated Fairfield on Thursday, 3-1 before eliminating fourth-seeded Niagara on Friday, 2-0.
It is the first MAAC title for Marist since 2006.
The Red Foxes will find out Sunday night which NCAA regional they will play in.
