All Nassau and Suffolk high school sports events scheduled for this weekend were officially postponed in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, according to the executive directors of athletics in both counties, who took part in a conference call on Thursday afternoon.

Included in those postponements were 32 first round football playoff games (16 in each county) that were to be played on Friday and Saturday. Nina Van Erk, executive director of Nassau athletics, and Ed Cinelli, executive director of Suffolk sports, said that no new dates, times or sites have been finalized yet but they expect the football quarterfinals to begin next weekend, with the county semifinals, finals and Long Island to follow on subsequent weekends.

That means the Long Island championships, played on Thanksgiving weekend since 1996, with the exception of 2001, will instead be played the weekend of Nov. 30-Dec. 2.
