Anthony Martelli, James Capoziello lead Valley Stream North in shutout

Anthony Martelli and James Capoziello connected for three long touchdown passes and Valley Stream North forced two turnovers while backed up against its goal line in a 26-0 shutout of Clarke in a Nassau IV football game Saturday.

After a scoreless first quarter, Martelli passed to Capoziello for a 49-yard touchdown to put Valley Stream North (4-2) ahead 6-0. The play capped a six-play, 82-yard drive in which Billy Patsos rushed for 35 yards on four carries and Martelli hit Stephen Giuliante for a 15-yard reception that set up Capoziello's score.

"We had a matchup that we liked and Capoziello beat the defender and made a nice catch and run," coach Tom Schiavo said. "We were going back-and-forth with three-and-outs after three-and-outs so that was huge."

Martelli connected with Capoziello from 48 yards out on the team's next possession to make it 12-0 at the half and they connected on a 52-yard TD to make it 19-0 to start the third quarter. Patsos scored the team's final touchdown on a 57-yard run.

Patsos rushed for 239 yards on 23 carries. Martelli completed 5 of 13 passes for 249 yards and three touchdowns, and Capoziello totaled 149 receiving yards on his three catches.

Capoziello caused a strip sack with Clarke (4-2) at VSN's 1-yard line and Brian Carroll made the other shutout-saving play by intercepting a pass at the 1. Chris Dinko and Nick Gonzalez led Valley Stream North with 10 tackles apiece.
