One would think the final week of the season would be about teams on the brink of a playoff berth needing a Week 8 win to get into the tournament. But in our power points reality, that's simply not the case.

All eight playoff teams are set in Conferences III and IV — it's just a matter of what seeds those teams get.

In Conference I, the winner of the Baldwin (3-4)-Hicksville...

"Touchdown" Tyler Heuer and his Oceanside mates meet their stiffest test of the season to date on Saturday when they take the field at Freeport.

It's not that the Red Devils can't be scored upon — they've allowed 131 points in seven games. It's that they're the first team the Sailors have faced this year who can keep up with them on the scoreboard.

"I'm not afraid, to take a stand. Everybody, come take my hand." — "Not Afraid" by Eminem.

With just one week left in the regular season, teams must put away their fears.

Some need a win in Week 8 to make the postseason, others are fighting for a home game in Round 1, while a select few are battling for the regular-season crown and the top seed.

Oceanside,...

Another week, another four touchdowns for Tyler Heuer.

The Oceanside senior QB is up to 22 passing TDs on the season (he also has seven rushing), and it's only a matter of time before the passing records start to fall.

With a 9-for-16 performance in Saturday's 41-14 win over Plainview JFK for 169 yards, Heuer is 82-for-130 (63 percent) for 1,318 passing yards with 22 touchdowns...

"So I travel back, down that road. Will she come back? No one knows." — "Just A Dream" by Nelly.

We're getting soulful this week here on the High School Football blog.

Heading into Week 7, these are the "dog days" for high school football teams. They've all got bumps and bruises, and the weather is beginning to turn cold.

With Oceanside, Carey and Lynbrook all winning statement games last week to solidify the top spot in Conferences I, II, and III, respectively, we turn our attention to the battles for second through fourth place.

Why are those spots coveted? Because they get to host first-round playoff games the first week in November.

Hewlett, which lost to Lynbrook in a battle for first place...

I hate to sound like a broken record every week.

But as the weeks progress, Oceanside quarterback Tyler Heuer only burnishes his reputation as the best football player in Nassau County. This week his victim was Farmingdale, and Heuer had to work his magic in come-from-behind fashion.

The Sailors trailed 14-0 in the first quarter, but who stopped the bleeding? Heuer, with a 41-yard touchdown...

"I am in misery, there ain't nobody who can comfort me," — "Misery" by Maroon 5.

In a matchup of undefeated teams, there's always one team that continues the dream of a perfect season. The thought of raising that Long Island Championship trophy over their head on Thanksgiving Weekend remains strong.

For the losers, it's a back-to-the-drawing-board mentality,...

Last night's Lynbrook-Hewlett game was a key Conference III football matchup between undefeated teams (it was won, 45-30, by the Owls). But the teams kept the game in perspective this week, devoting time and effort to a worthy mission for the troops in Afghanistan.

Seven teams still have dreams of capping an undefeated season at Hofstra or Stony Brook on Thanksgiving Weekend — Oceanside, Wantagh, Carey, Hewlett, Lynbrook, Seaford and Roosevelt — but two of them will have their visions of grandeur dashed in Week 5.

Yes, it's statement week in Nassau County.

In Conference II and III, we'll finally have a team with sole possession...
