High School Football
Newsday goes deep with Long Island high school football.
Plainedge met Hewlett this past Saturday in wintry conditions that included poor visibility, driving rain and a snowy field.
It makes for a rough game for those involved, but great highlights for us. Take a look at the video above and click here to read Laura Albanese's game story....Read more »
"Oh, oh I want some more, oh, oh, what are you waiting for?" — "Animal" by Neon Trees.
At this time of year, every team has an animalistic instinct to hunt down its opponents and destroy them.
It's no fluke to advance to a county final. You've got to be good. And you've got to know how to win once you get here.
Farmingdale, a perennial power, showed...Read more »
If last night was any indication, fans are in for some fantastic football at Hofstra this weekend. In the Conference I semifinals, top-seeded Freeport beat a pesky Syosset team 39-25, and then No. 3 Farmingdale cruised past No. 2 Oceanside, 42-20 (more on this game right here on the blog a little later).
So with the Conference I final set, let's turn our attention to Conference III, which...Read more »
"You know we're superstars. We are who we are." — "We R Who We R" by Ke$ha.
Not going to lie, we here at the High School Football blog have a bit of a crush on Ke$ha. Actually, that's not completely true. I don't think Mr. Herzog knows who she is.
But me, yeah, I'm a fan. Or maybe it's just that I like to type the dollar sign where the "s" should be.

Every week you loyal bloggers come out to read about the best games Nassau County has to offer. But every game in the postseason is a good one! Well, at least the vast majority are.
So this week, I'm going on upset alert. In today's paper, Gregg Sarra, Andy Slawson, Bob Herzog, MSG Varsity's Carl Reuter and myself picked all 34 playoff games on the Island this weekend (16 Nassau, 16 Suffolk,...Read more »
One would think the final week of the season would be about teams on the brink of a playoff berth needing a Week 8 win to get into the tournament. But in our power points reality, that's simply not the case.
All eight playoff teams are set in Conferences III and IV — it's just a matter of what seeds those teams get.
In Conference I, the winner of the Baldwin (3-4)-Hicksville...Read more »
Hard to believe the penultimate week of the regular season is upon us. It seems like just yesterday we were at Syosset on Labor Day for the opening game of the season.
But enough nostalgia, we've still got important games to play, including tonight's game of the year in Conference IV — the last matchup of undefeated teams on Long Island this season.
Roosevelt and Seaford are two...Read more »
We're down to eight unbeatens in Nassau (two in each conference), and a maximum of seven will remain that way after the weekend as East Meadow and Oceanside meet in battle of 3-0 squads.
Week 4 is a swing week for many 2-1 teams. A 3-1 start will go the long way towards a playoff berth, while 2-2 puts you back with the rest of the pack. With that said, let's get to this week's games to...Read more »
Due to Yom Kippur beginning at sundown on Friday, all public school games will be played on Thursday. It's been an unconventional couple of weeks to start the season, with games spread throughout the week.
Week 3 returns to normalcy with a typical Friday night/Saturday afternoon slate, but for now, here are five games from each county worth keeping an eye on today.
(All teams listed...Read more »
We've only completed 1/8th of the regular season, but it's never too early to start thinking about candidates for the Thorp Award, given to Nassau's top player.
Clearly this is only a preliminary list and has no bearing on the voting that takes place after the season. Other players can certainly play their way onto the list, and changes week-to-week will be frequent. It's just one man's early-season...Read more »
