Folks, Evan Korn here from Stony Brook's La Valle Stadium for the Class III Long Island Championship Game between Sayville (11-0) and Lawrence (10-1). This game pits two of the Island's high-flying offenses, with Sayville QB Steven Ferreira and Lawrence's Fredericks' brothers (Ryan, Tyler, Jordan) expected to put up big numbers.

Reflections on Sayville-Islip

Given what was at stake, a berth in next week’s Long Island Championship, this was the most tension-filled game I’ve covered this season.

After a scoreless first half, the back-and-forth drama in the fourth quarter was terrific theater. There were three huge plays in 1:24 early in what turned out NOT to be the final period.

First, Islip’s Jeffrey Craig hooked up with...

Suffolk Slant: The Top 10

Floyd's Luke Miller (6) is brought down by

There were no real surprises in last week’s semifinals, so the only changes are in spots 7-10. Nine of the teams in my Top 10 will be playing for either a county title or, in the case of St. Anthony’s, the CHSFL crown.

Zog’s Top 10

1. Sachem North (10-0). The Flaming Arrows continued to dominate, earning their second straight trip to the Division I championship by beating...

Suffolk Slant: The Top 10

With less than a minute to go in

Chalk prevailed for the most part in the first week of the playoffs, so there were no changes in my Top 10. The only semifinal game this week that matches two top 10 teams occurs in Division I, where No. 2 Floyd hosts No. 3 Longwood in a rematch of a game won by the Lions during the regular season. It’s also one of those “backyard brawl” games that should be very intense.

The regular season ended with a bang, when Huntington stunned Islip, 14-7, to hand the Bucs their first loss of the season. That victory gave Sayville the No. 1 seed in Division III.

Another unbeaten team bit the dust when Bellport knocked off Newfield, 24-0. That insured the No. 1 seed for East Islip in Division II and shook up my top 10.

Otherwise, Sachem North maintained the top seed...

Suffolk Slant: Top 10

With one week left in the regular season, the top spot looks secure. Sachem North finishes up with Bay Shore, a powerful offensive team but one unlikely to be able to stop the Flaming Arrows.

However, No. 2 St. Anthony’s has a big regular-season finale on Saturday at Iona Prep. Both are 6-0 in the CHSFL’s AAA division with the winner getting the top seed for the playoffs.

Only five undefeated teams remain as we enter Week 7, after Sayville fell to Islip. Our top two teams face tests this week as Sachem North hosts once-beaten Longwood on Friday night and St. Anthony’s visits once-beaten Holy Trinity on Saturday.

Suffolk Slant: Games to watch

North Babylon went on to beat West Babylon

Week 6 is a big one in the 631 because the preseason No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in each league square off. In Leagues I and III, those seeds have held up and first place is on the line. In Leagues II and IV, the games still have serious playoff implications.

Be sure to check Friday’s paper as Gregg Sarra, Andy Slawson, Chris Mascaro and myself make picks for 10 of the best games on Long Island...

Longwood running back Davonte Booker #12 dives for

(Credit: GEORGE A. FAELLA)

A bit of a shakeup this week, thanks to Longwood’s impressive 22-13 victory over Floyd on Saturday. The Lions had lost 12 of their previous 13 games against the Colonials. But that win moves them from Honorable Mention all the way up to No. 4 in my latest rankings. So, of course there’s a ripple effect throughout my top 10. With Floyd falling from the undefeated ranks, there are six...
