Nassau playoffs began in 1970 and have undergone a number of changes in format since then. Playoffs in Suffolk began in 1946 and were held through 1953. No playoffs were held again until 1972. many changes have occurred in the Suffolk playoff format as well. The current "Big Four" system began in Nassau in 1984 and in Suffolk in 1992. The Long Island Championship games started in 1992.

In 1996, the CHSFL changed its format. It went from AAA, AA, A champ to a separate (A) tournament champ and championship tournament. Championship tournaments are the bigger CHSAA schools and an A champ are the smaller CHSAA schools. In 1997, the CHSFL changed the format to an A championship (bigger schools) and a B championship (smaller schools).
