Sean Cerrone made many big plays against Holy Trinity Sunday, but none were bigger than when the Chaminade quarterback connected with Joseph Bellantuono for a 25-yard completion late in the fourth quarter.

It was the play that "picked everybody up," Cerrone said, which led to John Curylo's 21-yard field goal with 2:31 left that sealed the host Flyers' 17-7 CHSFL win over the Titans.

"We had to have that big pass play," said Cerrone, who connected with Bellantuono on first-and-10 from the Chaminade 39-yard line, following a big defensive stand on Holy Trinity's previous possession. "They gave us a bunch of problems, so we really had to have that."

The defensive play of the game for the Flyers (5-0) came on fourth-and-2 from their own 12-yard line, when Holy Trinity running back Phillip Crawford was stopped at the line of scrimmage for no gain with 6:03 left.

Chaminade led 14-7 at the time, and after the turnover on downs, Bellantuono made the big reception out in the flat four plays later.

"I think it's what got the team fired up," Bellantuono said. "My coaches put the faith in me and I had to pump everyone up. I just played aggressive and went up and got the ball."

Cerrone completed 7 of 13 passes for 101 yards, and rushed for 59 yards and two touchdowns on six carries. The first score was on a quarterback sneak from 2 yards out and the second a 20-yard burst up the middle on a fake handoff to give the Flyers a 14-0 halftime lead.

Holy Trinity (2-3) cut it to 14-7 on Crawford's 11-yard touchdown run with 5:15 left in the third quarter. He finished with 56 yards on 13 carries.

Holy Trinity coach Tony Mascia was pleased with the way his team competed.

"I'm proud of the way the kids hung in there," said Mascia, whose team got a big boost when Earl Myers picked off a Cerrone pass in the end zone early in the fourth to keep the score at 14-7. "We're going to keep getting better every week."

Flyers running back Rob Speranza sees his team doing the same, crediting the club's special-teams play for giving Chaminade good field position.

"We're finding ways to win," said Speranza, who rushed for 64 yards on nine carries and also had two catches for 20 yards. "That play by Joe gave us the big positive yards we needed. It was big in setting the tone. We all have faith in each other."
