Suffolk roundup: Yezarski's return lifts Panthers
Austin Yezarski returned the opening kickoff of the second half 96 yards untouched to break a scoreless tie and lead top-seeded Miller Place over No. 8 Deer Park, 24-0, in a Division III quarterfinal. After Joe Santoro recovered a fumble on the Deer Park 40-yard line, Jake Buonaiuto capped a three play-drive with an 11-yard touchdown run with 3:34 left in the third to put Miller Place up 12-0. Ethan Fox led Miller Place with 15 tackles at linebacker. Brett Osman ran for 102 yards and a fourth quarter TD on 15 carries. Senior Liam Walsh completed 5 of 9 passes for 170 yards (a career-high) and a touchdown. Miller Place (9-0) will host No. 7 Sayville at 1 p.m. Saturday in a semifinal. Jasawn Thompson ran for 186 yards on 40 carries for Deer Park.
Huntington 35, Hauppauge 14: Troy Greene's 8-yard touchdown with 11:07 left in the third quarter capped a four-play, 73-yard drive to give No. 4 Huntington a 14-7 lead over No. 5 Huntington in a Division III quarterfinal. Christian Jamison caught a 5-yard pass from Ben Kocis with 5:03 left in the third quarter to put the Blue Devils up 21-7. Levar Butts ran for 118 yards on 17 carries and scored two touchdowns. Troy Greene ran for 181 yards on 22 carries. Butts made 10 tackles to lead the Blue Devils. Huntington (6-3) will host No. 6 Bellport at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Glenn 30, Bayport-Blue Point 0: Tom Balacki completed 7 of 15 passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns, Keeshawn Boodie ran for 120 yards and two scores on 18 carries, and senior Stephen Orkiszewski had a career-high three interceptions to lead No. 3 Glenn over No. 6 Bayport-Blue Point in a Suffolk IV quarterfinal. Glenn (7-2) will visit No. 2 Mount Sinai on Saturday in a semifinal. BBP finished 5-4. After Orkiszewski intercepted a pass on BBP's first possession, Glenn scored on its first drive when Balacki hit Boodie out of the backfield for a 30-yard TD.
Babylon 53, East Hampton 8:Eric Schweitzer scored three touchdowns, including a score on the game's first play from scrimmage after returning a fumble recovery 16 yards for a touchdown, to lead No. 1 Babylon (9-0) over No. 8 East Hampton (3-6) in a Suffolk IV quarterfinal Friday night. He caught a 10-yard TD pass from Nick Santorelli to increase the lead to 14-0 and added a 31-yard TD run later in the first. Santorelli, a senior quarterback, completed 3 of 3 passes for 73 yards and two touchdowns and now has 1,215 passing yards on the season, breaking his own single-season record of 1,153 yards set last season. He connected with Jake Carlock for a 49-yard TD reception down the sideline to cap a 33-0 first quarter. Luke Zappia had four carries for 48 yards, including a 20-yard TD run in the first, and added two sacks. Cortland Heneveld put East Hampton on the board with a 62-yard TD run in the fourth. Babylon will host No. 4 Shoreham-Wading River in a semifinal at 6 p.m. on Friday.
Mount Sinai 20, Greenport/Southold 14: Mike Cortese rushed for 206 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries to lead No. 2 Mount Sinai (7-2) over No. 7 Greenport/Southold (6-3) in a Suffolk IV quarterfinal Friday night. After being shutout in the first half, Mount Sinai's offense scored 20 points in the second half. Cortese ran up the middle for a 56-yard touchdown run with five minutes remaining to give Mount Sinai a 20-7 lead. Linebacker Nick Cavaliere led the defense with seven tackles and linebacker Anthony Abbondanza forced a fumble and recorded six tackles, including two for a loss. Mount Sinai will host No. 3 Glenn at 6 p.m. Friday.
