Amber Davis needed to have a case of convenient amnesia. The Center Moriches junior forward, who has led the team in scoring every year since eighth grade, had no points with less than a minute left in the third quarter. That’s not a recipe for the Red Devils to win against Mattituck, one of its tougher opponents in League VII.

Fortunately for the Red Devils, Davis scored nine of her 11 points in the fourth quarter as Center Moriches won, 41-37.
“I took some shots that I shouldn’t have,” Davis said. “I just had to play defense and get rebounds when I wasn’t scoring. Everyone looks at me to step up. Even when the shots aren’t going in, you just trust your teammates.”
There wasn’t much offense in this game. Both teams played good defense and both teams committed a lot of turnovers. Center Moriches has a scoreboard that has the number of each player on the court as well as their fouls and points. It seemed at one point in the game that several players had more fouls than points.
Davis picked up her fourth foul with 6:17 left in the third. Mattituck’s leading scorer Stephenie Pisacano barely played as she picked up her fourth foul with 2:54 left in the first half and didn’t return until there were seven minutes left in the game. Mattituck’s Emily Ianno had four fouls in the first half and teammate Theresa Zuhoksi (13 points) fouled out. Kelsey Glanzman fouled out for Center Moriches after getting nine points and 13 rebounds.
It forced both teams to dig into their bench. Emma Whittle played her first game of the season for Center Moriches and while she didn’t score, she played good defense and hustled all over the court. She had four steals in the fourth quarter.
“We didn’t play well at all,” Center Moriches coach Rich Alifano said. “We had some trouble with their extended defense. Sometimes you have to win ugly.”
Said Mattituck coach Steve Van Dood: “We turned the ball over in some key moments. That’s youth. We’re going to get better.”

It's shaping up to be a great battle for League VII between Center Moriches, Wyandanch and Mattituck. Who do you think will win?
