Carly Rose Sonenclar loses out on Shorty Award
The fifth annual Shorty Awards honoring excellence in social media took place in Manhattan on Monday night, with Mamaroneck teen singing sensation Carly Rose Sonenclar nominated in two categories: best singer and best reality star.
The 13-year-old runner-up in last season's "The X Factor" lost out to popular YouTube star Greyson Chance in the singing category, and the reality star category was not announced during the awards ceremony.
Sonenclar's competition in the reality star category were her fellow "X Factor" contestants Diamond White and CeCe Frey, Kevin and Danielle Jonas, stars of "Married to a Jonas," and Malaysian singer Siti Nurhaliza. Sonenclar did not attend the awards ceremony.
This year's Shorty Awards featured 65 fan-nominated categories and seven specially selected categories. Fans had from Jan. 7 to Feb. 8 to tweet their picks. The top six vote-getters became finalists. Sonenclar garnered the third most nominations in the reality show category and fifth most for singer.
A panel of judges then selected winners based on criteria related to the nominee's social media presence, including quality of content, fan engagement and impact. Judges are made up of both tech innovators, such as Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales and Craig Newmark, the Craig in Craigslist.com, as well as a mish-mash of celebrities, including Charlie Sheen, Alyssa Milano and MC Hammer.
Sonenclar has been a hit with fans online since her reality show debut, amassing a large and loyal Twitter fan base — currently at 776,247 followers — who call themselves “Carly’s Angels.” Sonenclar has returned the love by interacting and sharing exclusive content with her fans on social media platforms.
Carly’s Angels rallied to secure Sonenclar two spots in the Shorty Award nominations. In a tweet sent out before the awards show she thanked her fans for nominating her.
As they've grown in notoriety since launching in 2008, the Shorty Awards have also added more categories, such as the two in which Sonenclar was nominated. However, the awards have also added some peculiar categories, such as Best Fake Account, Best GIF Maker and Best One Direction Account, in which the boy band's official account earned fewer nominations than Applebee's — yes, the restaurant chain.
Although some categories and nominees sound like jokes, Sonenclar's fans took voting very seriously, with one fan creating a campaign video, and so many fans tweeting their support that "#VoteForCarlyInShortyAwards" became a worldwide trending topic during the nomination period.
The awards were handed out at TimesCenter in Manhattan in a ceremony hosted by Felicia Day, creator and star of popular web series "The Guild.” Fashion model and Hastings-on-Hudson resident Coco Rocha also presented several awards.
Despite losing the singing category, a rising star like Sonenclar should be happy just to be nominated, as it proves even though her "X Factor" run is over her fans are nowhere near ready to tune her out.
