Big players make big plays in big games, and that's what Lorraine Hickman and Valerie Fox did Wednesday night for No. 4 Floral Park.
After a six-point lead dwindled to two early in the fourth quarter, Fox and Hickman totaled seven of Floral Park's nine points down the stretch to close out No. 5 Seaford, 39-32, in a Nassau A quarterfinal.
Floral Park will play No. 1 North Shore in a semifinal game Tuesday at Freeport.
"The girls never lost faith in me and it's just natural to shoot the ball when you get it," Hickman said.
Added Fox: "I feel a little more pressure but it doesn't really matter to me as long as I'm doing what's best for the team."
Seaford's Jessica Rini had two baskets in the first minute of the fourth to bring the Vikings within 30-28, but Fox hit a deep two from the far corner to put Floral Park (14-5) back up by four.
After another Seaford basket, Hickman made it 36-32 on a power move in the post and later hit a free throw to make it a five-point game.
Fox sealed it with two free throws in the closing seconds.
The Knights' bench came alive in the third quarter after the score was tied at 21 at the half. Erica Bowe hit two deep jumpers from opposite corners and Brittany Ingram added a basket inside.
Ingram, along with starting guards Jeanna Orfanos and Lindsey Tanalski, led a strong defensive effort that limited Seaford to just three points in the period and gave the Knights a 30-24 lead heading into the fourth.
"We made some adjustments and switched to a zone and came out in a 1-2-1-1 press . . . and I think that changed the whole momentum of the game," Floral Park coach Mike Spina said.
Seaford (15-4) led 12-9 after the first and was up by seven earlier in the period as Kathryn Siler hit three three-pointers.
Siler and Rini each had 11 points for Seaford. Hickman finished with 14 points and eight rebounds, Fox had nine points and Alex Baldini had eight points and seven rebounds.
