Labrador retrievers still top dog
The American Kennel Club announced Wednesday the most popular dog breeds in America, and for the 22nd consecutive year, the Labrador retriever ranks No. 1. German shepherds and golden retrievers rounded out the top three.
The most popular breeds generally also reflect the breeds most commonly admitted into animal shelters, said Dana Rocco, manager of the New Rochelle Humane Society, which cares for abandoned and sick animals.
But Rocco added that the American Kennel Club doesn't account for mixed breeds, whose numbers have seen a huge increase at her shelter.
"People who used to be walking the golden retriever are now maybe walking a lab mix," Rocco said.
Rocco also doesn't think No. 2-ranked German shepherds have been as popular in Westchester County as they are nationally, but she has seen more of the breed in recent years.
