Big Win Alert: West Babylon defeats Ward Melville
There was a time, way back in the beginning of the season, when people looked at West Babylon and they saw two things:
1. Christina Esposito, doing a whole lot of the scoring.
2. That 0-3 record.
Let's just say that things have changed. Oh, Esposito is still doing her thing, but West Babylon, which didn't even make the postseason last year, not only turned things around, it turned things around in a big way. You probably wanna know more about that big win, huh? Well...read on.
The Eagles (13-1, 13-3) defeated previously unbeaten Ward Melville, 12-5 (right?!) on Friday night. But chances are, if you're a girls lax fan, you knew that. (And, if you read my Top 10s, you totally know I said it was possible). Check out the leading scorer, though: Samantha Apuzzo, freshman.
Apuzzo scored six goals and, when I interviewed her, Esposito and coach Colleen Kilgus on Wednesday, they made it clear this was very much part of the Eagles' maturation.
"In the beginning, I'd hear a lot of coaches and fans say that it was all Espo," Kilgus said. "But you started to see her feed to other people, like Apuzzo. Girls stepped up and now Sam is one of our leading scorers."
Esposito (who had two goals and three assists) said she's all for it. One of the team's strengths is "moving the ball on attack." And that means she's more than happy to share the wealth.
"Espo's always looking for me," Apuzzo said. Now, opponents will be looking for her, too.
