Suffolk Top 10 (as of 6/5)

Congrats to county champions Northport, Hauppauge and Mt. Sinai on a great season. The Tigers and Mustangs advance to the state semifinals on Friday at SUNY-Cortland.

1. Northport (18-2)
The Tigers earned their first LIC in seven years, holding two-time defending state champion Farmingdale to a season-low seven goals in Saturday’s 14-7 win. Northport avenged their loss in the county finals in 2010 with a 19-8 win over Bay Shore on Thursday. All of this with “The Franchise” Shannon Gilroy playing on a bad wheel after suffering a Grade 1 ankle sprain less than a week earlier. Megan Marinelli played unbelievable defense in the LIC as the Tigers were without two starting midfielders, Mary Pat Theofield (knee) and Erin Magnuson (suspension). Northport takes on Section I champion Lakland/Panas in the state semifinals at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Cortland.
2. Hauppauge (19-1)
The Eagles played a perfect first 10 minutes against Garden City in the LIC, forcing turnovers with aggressive defense and out-hustling the Trojans to a 2-0 lead. Then the depth of the five-time defending champs wore down the Eagles who allowed 5 of 6 goals in the first half while a man down. Taylor “The Zombie” Ranftle, Jen Porretto and Lauren Descalzo gave it their all on offense but the Trojan defense and Kelly Weis in goal were able to shut them down most of the day. Hauppauge won its first county title in Thursday’s 8-5 win over SWR.
3. Bay Shore (15-4)
The Marauders fell to Northport in the county finals. Bay Shore may be the best passing team on LI, as they showed against West Islip, but they could not find a rhythm against the Tigers.
4. Floyd (14-4)
5. West Islip (14-4)
6. Half Hollow Hills (13-5)
7. Mt. Sinai (13-4)

Won their first county crown after a 19-day layoff and then knocked off a very good North Shore team in the LICs. The Mustangs are extremely young but they are fast, athletic and have size up front in Rachel Dillon and Shannon Burns. Mt. Sinai gets Section I champion Pearl River at noon Friday at Cortland.
8. Shoreham-Wading River (11-8)
A great postseason run came to an end in the county finals to Hauppauge. The Wildcats tied the game at 5 and pushed the Eagles to the brink, which few teams can say.
9. Sayville (15-3)
10. Bayport-Blue Point (12-5)
The Phantoms cut a 5-0 halftime deficit down to one but could never fully dig themselves out of the hole and fell to Mt. Sinai 8-6 in Thursday’s county final.
