Get the scoop on the Long Island girls lacrosse scene from Newsday
Laura Albanese, a Brooklyn native, graduated from Brooklyn College with a major in journalism and a minor in everything in 2007. She joined Newsday as an news-side intern on the Long Island desk that summer and became a part of High School sports department later that year. She has a varied journalistic background, having covered everything from the Brooklyn Supreme Court to girls gymnastics and back again for various outlets, including the Daily News. Her preference, though, remains baseball and soccer. She has yet to master not getting lost in Long Island while on the way to games.
There must be something to having Mass. appeal. After all, there seems to be an impending Mass. exodus in regards to girls lacrosse.

Farmingdale’s Samantha Brescia last week made a verbal commitment to UMass, joining a slew of other Long Island girls who have chosen to play lacrosse at Massachusetts.

In news that surely will stun everyone…A Long Island team won a lacrosse tournament! The Long Island underclassmen girls team won the Under Armour national tournament, beating New Jersey, 9-8, in the championship game on Sunday in Maryland. Team Long Island went 3-1 in the double-elimination tournament. Its loss was to Washington, D.C., 12-11, in pool play on Saturday. They beat Baltimore, 13-10,...Read more »
The Under Armour All-America North team, which featured 10 Long Islanders, lost to the South, 25-13, in the Under Armour All-America Classic on Saturday at Towson University.
McDonogh’s Taylor Cummings had five goals and three assists to lead the South. Kelci Smesko (Ridgewood) added five goals and Corinne Etchison (McDonogh) had three goals and five assists.

The Dowling Sports Complex will host the Long Island Championships on Sunday (so the Suffolk teams, technically, are home) and the game schedules are in reverse alphabetical order. The Class C game starts first, followed by the "B" and then "A."
