Billi Godsey's character key in Iona women's basketball hiring
So what was it about Billi Godsey? Why did Iona, in hiring its new women’s basketball coach, choose someone who had no previous head coaching experience and came from a program, Virginia Tech, that won just 17 games in her two years on the staff?
Incoming athletic director Rick Cole Jr. made it clear Tuesday that her character and emphasis on academics weighed heavily.
"I think if you watch her career, every place that she has been, she has made better,” Cole told ICGaels.com. “And I think it’s not just about the basketball. It’s about the relationship that she has with the people from her campus, her student-athletes, her co-workers, her peers. She’s just the consummate professional.”

To be sure, success has not eluded Godsey during her career as an assistant coach. She was on staffs that led teams to the WNIT tournament at Maryland-Baltimore County and the NCAA Division II tournament at Molloy College on Long Island.
