Afterthoughts from Farmingdale vs. Massapequa

I was in attendance for Wednesday’s game between Farmingdale and Massapequa and wanted to offer some insight and details from the game, which ended as a 1-1 tie.

Massapequa had a chance in the third minute when Erica Modena had a breakaway but her shot was stopped by Kaitlin Gaghan. After that Farmingdale owned the first half of play. The Dalers were dominant in every phase of the game. They won every 50/50 ball and if it was a tie they knocked Massapequa off the ball with ease. Colleen Reynolds was a main contributor for the Dalers in the midfield along with Maggie Fleming.

Amanda Borstelmann and Amanda Turturro each had kicks sail wide for Farmingdale only minutes apart. Then in the 29th minute Turturro took a shot which was saved by Emmalee Meyer, the rebound bounced around inside of the 18-yard box and was kicked off the post before Borstelmann kicked the ball past a diving Meyer.

With all their dominance Farmingdale led just 1-0 at the half. Chalk that up to the abysmal weather conditions and Meyer, who played very well.

The game didn’t totally change in the second half but Massapequa did play harder and was not getting outhustled to the ball like the first half. Farmingdale also abandoned the right side of the field, which they were using a lot during the first half.

Rosie DiMartino scored with 26:38 left in the second half on a kick from about 35 yards out. DiMartino fired a left-footed blast which curved inside the left post to tie the game.

The Chiefs rode the momentum and DiMartino nearly scored again with 19:43 left when a rebound found her just inside the 18 but Gaghnan made a crucial stop. Modena had a chance from the right side with 5:17 left but Gaghan came up big again.

The game felt like a playoff game as Farmingdale was really intense in the first half and both teams made very few substitutions.
