Love for Lauren in Kings Park

The Love for Lauren will continue on Thursday in Kings Park.

The Kings Park girls soccer team will host a fundraiser at Kings Park High School during their game against Islip at 4 p.m. on Thursday for Lauren Lenardi, a teammate who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma in December. The game will be called "Lauren Strong," to honor Lenardi, 15, who has been undergoing weekly chemotherapy treatments at Sloan Kettering Hospital in Manhattan since Christmas.

In addition to selling yellow “Lauren Strong” t-shirts for $15, the team will also be having a bake sale with all proceeds going to the Love for Lauren Foundation to support the Lenardi family.

After making the JV team as a freshman, Lenardi was placed on the varsity team this season and has been an inspiration for her teammates, who have helped raise money and also thrown her a birthday party.

“She tells me she wears her uniform everyday on the way to the hospital,” Kings Park coach Bryan LoPalo said. “Basically, we’ve been dedicating our whole season to Lauren.”

It’s been a season Lauren could be proud of. With captains Katherine Corcoran and Michelle Ianiello in the midfield and Brittany Mueller anchoring the defense, Kings Park is atop League V with a 7-1-1 record.

“She’s with us every day,” LoPalo said. “We say, ‘Refuse to Lose.’ Lauren is living with that mantra.”
