Postgame: St. Anthony's vs. Kellenberg

More postgame reaction from St. Anthony's 1-0 win over Kellenberg in the CHSAA championship on Friday night at Adelphi University.

St. Anthony's managed to neutralize Kellenberg's speed to beat the one league opponent they could not defeat during the regular season.  The Friars won their second straight league title and now look to capture their 18th state title.

Side note: Congrats to Kellenberg's Leanne Miller and Sacred Heart's Natalie Cikos, who were named CHSAA co-Players of the Year after the game.

On being named game MVP:
“It’s the best feeling in the world. I didn’t think I would cry but then it all started coming out. I didn’t think I was the best player on the field, it was a team effort. We wouldn’t have won if it wasn’t for every single player on the field. Even the girls coming off the bench made a difference.”

On switching positions to mark Christina Akalski:
“I’m usually center back with Emily but we changed our formation to fit Kellenberg. I pushed up and played stopper. I was just being physical and getting to the ball first and using cover and we shut her down the whole game.”

On overcoming their struggles against Kellenberg:
“It was a hard game but we worked all season for this game and we came in as underdog. We really played our hearts out today.”

On being underdogs:
“We usually don’t feel that way. We’re usually undefeated. But I think the loss was good for us because it really thought us to appreciate how it feels to win. It feels great today.”

On being league champs:
“Every single girl wanted it. We played so hard, played for each other. Played for our seniors that haven’t won a state championship and I really think we’re going to take it this year…I just hope we can get a state championship so our grade can graduate with a state championship.”

On the win:
“We knew coming in that we were underdogs and we just came in with everything we have.”

On being underdogs:
“It was a lot different than it normally is but with all the dedication and heart on this team it wasn’t a big deal.”

On the state tournament:
“States are at our home this year so we wanted to make it through. Especially after last year losing a tough one, coming back this year we should be able to pull it out.”

On the goal:
“The ball came through and Reanna was running on but I saw that I had a better angle and called her off.”

On overcoming their struggles against Kellenberg:
“They are very fast. Courtney had an amazing game, cant ask for more. I’ve never seen her play that well. Our entire backline was solid through the back and our keeper was amazing.”

On her goal:
“I got it in the middle from Reanna I turned and did a through ball to Margo, then one-two and then one-time finish.”

On being underdogs:
“It was rough because we knew from the beginning that we should be on top. We felt as if we were the best team out here and that’s what we wanted.”

On team’s preparation:
“We started off the season not being able to finish our goals and for the past two weeks we have been doing non-stop shooting and finishing.”

On state tournament, which is being held at St. Anthony’s:
“We’re going to have all our fans in the stands. We’re going to work really hard this week. Nothing is going to get in the way of us winning it. Nothing.”

On her prediction:
“In the beginning, we did a shooting drill and Gab and I always have a joke of me not finishing. And I was like, ‘Gab, for you, I’m going to score this game.’ All I know is that I’m really happy that I came through with what I said.”

On her psychic ability:
“I think I’m going to go buy a lottery ticket right now actually.”

On overcoming their struggles against Kellenberg:
"We changed our system. When we played them the second game, they dominated the midfield and we had to compensate for that."

On Courtney Davis:

“She was outstanding all night. We needed her to be strong in there today, we knew that going in. She really did the job."

On Sydney Arestivo:
“She predicted she was going to score. She told the other assistant coach that she was going to score. She’s a good player, she’s got a big time future. She’s in the national pool. She’s a super player.”

On the state tournament::
“Personally, I’m just glad to be in it. We’ve been in it many times, won it 17 times. Hopefully we can do it again.”

On the loss:
“It was our team goal to beat them. It just wasn’t our game, I guess. We all worked really hard and put everything we had into it. I’m really proud of all the girls. We just came up a little short.”

On being named CHSAA co-Player of the Year:

“It’s surprising. I didn’t know that I was getting it. It feels really great. I want to thank all the people that nominated me.”
