Suffolk Girls Soccer: The Big 10

The top 10 girls soccer teams in Suffolk based on games played through October 20:

1. St. Anthony’s (13-0-1)
Three more games and three more shutouts for the Friars. St. Anthony’s went into Sacred Heart and held them scoreless in a 1-0 win, in which Reanna Marino scored the winner with eight minutes remaining. Maria Jones then scored two goals in a 2-0 win as the Friars sent Kellenberg home without a goal. Elizabeth Agiato goal five minutes into St. Anthony’s showdown with second-place St. John the Baptist was all they would need in a 3-0 win. After eight straight shutouts, it’s been nearly a month since the Friar defense and keepers Jensen Wiedmer and Danielle Maurice have allowed a ball to get behind them.

2. Sachem East (9-1)
Alyssa Gutierrez recorded three shutouts on the week, giving her five straight. Brianna Phillips scored two goals in a 4-0 win over Brentwood and added the winner in a 1-0 win over Ward Melville and Morgan Tinari had the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Floyd. Sachem East remains on top of League I but faces a crucial game on Monday against Commack, the only team to hand Flaming Arrows a league loss. Check Tuesday’s Newsday for complete coverage.

3. Northport (9-1)
Outscored opponents 19-2 on the week thanks in part to Mary Pat Theofield, who scored a career-high four goals in a 9-0 win over Central Islip, Courtney Fortunato, who had three goals and two assists in a 6-1 win over Lindenhurst, and Rosie Hayes, who had a hat trick in a 4-1 win over Whitman. The League II title could be on the line in Wednesday’s highly anticipated game at Connetquot.

4. Connetquot (10-1)
Three shutouts for keeper Natasha Purchla on the week. Kelly Geheran’s goal was all Connetquot needed in a 1-0 win over Lindenhurst. The Murino sisters helped seal a 2-0 win over Whitman, in which JoJo scored the go-ahead goal, and a 3-0 win over Bay Shore, in which Deanna had a goal and two assists. Connetquot gets the opportunity to pass Northport in the power rankings and clinch the League II title this Wednesday in their rematch with the Tigers, who defeated the Thunderbirds 5-3 on October 6.

5. West Islip (7-1-3)
The week started off well for the defending Class AA champions after Molly Ohman broke a scoreless tie with 19 minutes remaining in a 1-0 win over cross-town rival East Islip and Chelsea Weir scored two goals in a 2-1 win over Smithtown West. But the Lions then needed four second half goals, two by Brooke Kerrigan, just to force a tie against winless Newfield.

6. Smithtown East (8-1-1)
Caitlin Farrell’s goal two minutes into the game against Half Hollow Hills East was all Smithtown East would need in a 3-0 win. Despite a 1-1 tie to Centereach, Smithtown East remains atop League III, although East Islip and West Islip aren’t far behind.

7. Half Hollow Hills West (9-1)
Things got a little tighter in League IV after Hills West suffered its first defeat of the season in a 4-0 loss to North Babylon. They responded with a 6-0 win over Copiague in which Stephanie Ramirez scored her first varsity goal and Christina Guilherme added two goals.

8. Deer Park (8-0-1)
Although it was a quiet week for the Deer Park offense, they managed to go 1-0-1. Larisa Zambelli had four saves in a scoreless tie with Eastport-South Manor and Jenai Davidson headed in a corner kick from Sabrina Riley with 2:38 remaining in the first half in a 1-0 win over Hauppauge.

9. Sayville (10-0)
Has won by four or more goals eight times this season, two of which came this week. Two-goal games by Madison Hoon and Kim Marra helped lead the Golden Flashes to an 8-1 win over Rocky Point and a two-goal game by Kelly Santangelo were key in a 4-0 win over Amityville.

10. West Babylon (8-2-1)
With three wins on the week, West Babylon has closed the gap on Hills West in League IV. After a 2-0 win over Lindenhurst, Marissa Garcia scored the go-ahead goal in a 2-0 win over Comsewogue and added two goals in a 4-0 win over Riverhead.
