Manhasset's Joe Blando finishes fourth in boys state golf tournament

Local bragging rights in high school golf go to Joe Blando.

The Manhasset senior finished tied for fourth overall, the best showing among Long Island golfers, in the boys state golf championship held Sunday and Monday at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course at Cornell University.

Blando tied for a tournament-best 2-under-par 69 in the second round Monday and finished with a two-day score of 5-over 147, five strokes behind winner Jack Gianniny of Pittsford Sutherland. 

As a top-six finisher, Blando qualifies to play in the Federation Cup at Bethpage Black on Sunday. 

Chris Yeom of Floral Park shot 76 in the second round and finished in eighth place overall with an 8-over 150 total. Middle Country’s Michael Miranda, the three-time Suffolk individual champion, shot a 152 to finish tied for 12th. Joining Blando, Yeom and Miranda on the all-state team, composed of the tournament’s top 20 finishers, are Matt Csillag of Syosset, who finished 16th with a 154 total, and Willis Huynh of Syosset, 19th with a 155.

As a team, Nassau finished in third place with a two-day total of 1,058, 18 strokes behind first-place Westchester. Suffolk finished in eighth, 87 strokes off the lead.
