Last year, the Suffolk gymnastics team took third in the state tournament, placed as high as fifth on the all-around and medaled in floor, beam and vault.

And that was without this year's record-breaker.

With the return of Bay Shore's Olivia O'Connor, who took off junior year only to earn an all-time high 38.675 in the state qualifier this fall, as well as West Islip dynamo Courtney VonBraunsberg and Ward Melville's Cydney Crasa, Suffolk is looking mighty formidable this time around. Crasa, a freshman, took second in the state tournament two years ago, while VonBraunsberg is the county titleholder on vault.

"My top three are all returnees and so are most of the other [specialists]" said Section XI coach Caryl Crasa, who also coaches Ward Melville. "I actually think we're stronger than last year. They've been working out and they've banded together as a team."

The state meet will take place March 2 at Smithtown East.
