A show of sportsmanship: Bay Shore & Lindenhurst

The saying has become cliché and is often overused – certainly in sports – but sometimes some things really do “put everything into perspective.”

On Saturday, following Bay Shore’s 4-0 win over Lindenhurst in the Suffolk Class A quarterfinals, the Marauders and Bulldogs posed together for the group photo seen above.

Lindenhurst, as we know, was one of the Long Island areas hit hardest by superstorm Sandy and some neighborhoods there still are reeling in its aftermath. Bay Shore’s field hockey team – among several other teams – put together a collection clothes, bedding, toiletries and food for their opponents.

“More important than the playoff victory was our team coming together to donate clothing and food for their devastated Lindy sisters,” Bay Shore coach Mary Drago said. “It was a tough week for all of those affected by the storm, and we knew it was important for the girls to have an understanding of how lucky they were.”

Few things can more quickly “put everything into perspective” than tragedy. But it’s always reassuring to know that, so often, hardship is met with character and goodwill. And in this case, a great show of sportsmanship to boot.
