Chaminade climbs standings with win over Iona
Chaminade beat Iona Prep 5-3 Wednesday in Mt. Vernon, earning a quality league win behind three points from Andrew Veglucci.
The Flyers (5-1-1, 11 points) are now tied with Iona (5-3-1, 11 points) in the CHSHL standings, and put themselves in position to battle for first place with rival St. Anthony’s in their next game on Jan. 6.
“[Chaminade] came at us today with a lot of team speed, a lot of guys jumping into the play. They did a good job of getting the puck deep and creating a lot of scoring opportunities,” Iona coach Mike Bonelli said. “They have a lot of good skill players and Veglucci really dominated the ice today. We had trouble containing him.”
Veglucci scored the eventual game-winner in the third period having already tallied two assists earlier in the game. Kyle Irwin and Joseph Anile each added a goal and an assist in the winning effort.
For Iona, the loss follows a disappointing 5-1 defeat at the hands of previously winless St. Mary’s (1-6-1, 3 points). Bonelli said his team has “gotten away from its game,” in its last two contests, and “uncharacteristically” have not been putting the puck on net as it had been in its previous games.
In Iona and Chaminade’s first meeting on Dec. 2, the Gaels shutout the Flyers 2-0. The two teams will square off again on Jan. 13 in Syosset at 6:30 p.m.
