Freeport's fabulous 50th

Freeport is reaching into its rich football heritage this weekend.

The Red Devils are celebrating the 50th anniversary of its 1963 undefeated Rutgers Cup winning team with a reunion dinner at Frank’s Steakhouse in Rockville Centre on Friday night which will be attended by Freeport’s 1963 Thorp Award winner Guy Riccardi and at least 15 of his teammates and their wives.

Those players also will be honored with a proclamation from Freeport mayor Robert Kennedy before Saturday’s game at Freeport against Oceanside. The Freeport Reunion Committee is hosting a pregame tailgate party for any Red Devil who played for their late coach Bill Ashley, whose final season was 1963. He won five Rutgers Cups during his 21 seasons.
