Valley Stream North, North Shore take Nassau 'B' crowns
The final scores are in, and your 2011-2012 Nassau Class 'B' indoor track and field champions are the Valley Stream North boys and the North Shore girls.
Valley Stream North defeated Manhasset 84-61 Tuesday night at St. Anthony's. Meanwhile, the North Shore girls translated a strong cross country season into indoor success as they defeated Valley Stream North 107-102.
To put it simply, the Valley Stream North boys won thanks to their depth. Sam Catalano and Peter Wilk finished 2-3 in the 3,200 to start things off for the Spartans, while Kendel Levy and Philip Paul went 1-3 in the shot put. Steven Barbuto and Shaquille Hodge also went 2-3 in the 300.
And, of course, there was Tom Bardabelias's narrow victory in the 1,000 that highlighted the night for the Spartans.
"This was the night that we were working for," Valley Stream North coach Tim Boyens said.
In the girls meet, Samantha Nadel and Brianna Nerud led the charge for North Shore as they went 1-2 in each of their events. Nerus won the 1,000 and the 600, while Nadel took the 55. Liz Caldwell and Jessica Donohue went 1-2 in the 3,000 as well.
Valley Stream North put up a fight, however, due in large part to their victories in the sprints. Shanice Johnson won the 55 in 7.44 seconds, while Angelique Jean-Charles won the 55 hurdles in 9.05 seconds.
