Josh Hyon admitted he was more mentally exhausted than physically exhausted late in Wheatley’s Nassau Class B semifinal game.
Yet it didn’t prevent him from making the biggest basket in the second-seeded Wildcats’ 72-68 victory over No. 3 East Rockaway Saturday at LIU Post.
Hyon’s putback off his own miss was the winning field goal in the third overtime that gave Wheatley (11-7) a 70-68...Read more »
Tom DeRosa knows the feeling of getting to the finals and not winning it all. It happened last season for the Smithtown-Hauppauge goaltender.
So when it was time to get ready for his senior season this year, DeRosa decided to take on more of a leadership role and help the younger guys.
“You don’t realize how long of a season it is,” said DeRosa, who was named an assistant captain. “If...Read more »

It’s been a grand season of boys basketball for St. John the Baptist, as both of the Cougars’ top players – Tavon Ginyard and Kyle Williams -- crossed the 1,000-point barrier.
Ginyard, a 5-9 junior guard, achieved the milestone on Feb. 7 in a victory over Chaminade. Ginyard wears No. 3 and that’s appropriate as he is Long Island’s top three-point shooter this season with 74. He also leads...Read more »
The Nassau board of women gymnastics officials announced last week(ish) that it will be holding a gymnastics judging course for anyone interested in becoming a judge. To clarify: A judge is one of those people who sit at the table during events and is somehow able to quantify the value of a pointed toe. In short, there's a good amount of stuff to learn.

Greg Gerber needed to thank someone. And he didn't wait.
The Bethpage senior forward scored his 1,000th career point during the fourth quarter of a boys basketball game against Floral Park last Friday. A timeout was called three possessions later to acknowledge the milestone, and Gerber was handed a plaque and a commemorative ball. He didn't hold the ball for long, though.

If a team throttles its opponent by 20 points, and without extenuating circumstances, would it not be fair to surmise that this team is superior? Likely. OK, now what if the losing team returns the favor and routs the other in a rematch?
Not so clear-cut.
And that’s what we have now in Conference A-III, after North Shore beat Floral Park, 72-48, yesterday. The victory evened the teams’...Read more »
