David Lustberg calls the Portledge boys’ basketball team’s full-court press the “press breaker down," and when it’s executed correctly, look out.
“I think if we can get our press breaker down, I don’t think many teams can beat us,” Lustberg said. “We love to get up and press. It’s exciting. We know it leads to easy buckets in transition.”
Thanks to the press breaker down, Portledge...Read more »
Here are some thoughts about the past week in Nassau boys basketball:
- Curtis Jenkins could dominate a basketball game, too. The Newsday All-Long Island football star has routinely recorded a double-double in points and rebounds and has led Farmingdale to a 5-0 start in AA-I. Jenkins took over a conference game against Uniondale Saturday. He scored 10 of his 15 points during the fourth quarter,...Read more »
Garden City girls fencing has a little bit of everything, from a former county champion to a sophomore duo that evokes memories of Mariano Rivera and John Wetteland.
The defending Nassau champions are led by senior Caitlin Gallant, who won the county individual sabre championship during the 2011-12 season. Gallant, a four-year starter, also made the county semifinals last season.

Farmingdale needed a big play and Amanda Hausmann delivered one in the clutch.
Hausmann’s three-point play with 22 seconds left was the big basket in the Dalers’ 38-35 home win over Hempstead in a Nassau Conference AA-I girls basketball game.
Hausmann had good positioning in the low post when she took the feed from Lauren Hill, before converting the tough layup as she was being fouled.

“I knew the Long Island Challenge was going to be a tough...Read more »

In the Lady Devils Basketball Invitational championship game Saturday at Freeport High School, Kaplan more often than not called out ‘Diamond’—Forster’s favorite formation.
“I was at the top of that,” said Forster, who at 6-1, is asked...Read more »

Taylor Calabrese can sense when Taylor Miller is going for a steal.
“I know how she plays,” said Calabrese, who is teammates with Miller on the Long Island Lightning in Amateur Athletic Association (AAU) girls’ basketball. “She’s hard to compete against.”
That was the sentiment shared by Calabrese and her Division teammates during the semifinals of the Lady Devils Basketball Invitational...Read more »
