The National Field Hockey Coaches Association named its All-Americans on Monday and this, likely, will come as no surprise: Katie Trombetta was selected. Again.
The Sachem East star received first-team All-American honors for a second straight year, a day after being named Newsday's Long Island Player of the Year, also for a second consecutive year.
"I just...Read more »
It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.
That’s the approach coach Jeff Stelmok is preaching to his St. Anthony's hockey club this early in the season.
St. Anthony’s (2-2-1), the four-time defending CHSHL ‘A’ Division champions, isn’t off to the best of starts. Yet, Stelmok doesn’t want anyone to be discouraged.
“It’s a matter of us sticking to our game plan, running it, and...Read more »
When Juliane Florez exploded for five goals on Wednesday, it was difficult to determine who was more excited about the accomplishment: Florez, who more than doubled her previous best output? Or the Friends Academy field hockey team, which was simply happy to see a large number on the scoreboard?
Florez, a junior, had a career high in goals and led Friends to a 7-2 win over host Port Washington....Read more »
Frankie Conklin, North Shore: The goalie was stellar, even in a 2-0 loss to Garden City. Conklin made 24 saves to keep the Vikings in the game against a Trojans offense that entered having outscored its last seven opponents 42-0. Conklin has made 42 saves with a .901 save percentage in North Shore’s last three games.
Ashley Faulhaber, Rocky Point: Had consecutive hat tricks last week, scoring...Read more »
Athletes in orange high socks and the field hockey players with orange hair ribbons, and even orange programs were distributed at Port Washington on Wednesday.
Orange is not the Vikings’ usual team color.
But it was yesterday. Schreiber High School was among the seven institutes in the Port Washington district to participate in “Unity Day,” a nationwide campaign that seeks to raise awareness...Read more »
I'm going with "Applause" as the title for these, at least for now. And, yes, it's a sutble reference to the song. But it works for this... I think. As always, hit me @StephenHaynes4 or via e-mail with any suggestions, nominations or random whatevers. And a sound salute to this week's POTWs.
Emily DeGennaro, Shoreham-Wading River: She made 22 saves in the Wildcats' 1-0 overtime upset...Read more »
Happy Birthday, Lindsay Bleistein!
She celebrated her 16th birthday on Tuesday by scoring the winner in overtime as Locust Valley upset Cold Spring Harbor, 1-0, in Nassau Conference I field hockey.
The Falcons have had a few impressive victories in recent years, but this one, given the teams' history, might take the cake.
“We had beaten them a couple times when I first started...Read more »
First one up this season, and I haven't thought of a snappy title for these yet (like "Kick-Starters" for soccer). Promise, I'll have a good one for next week's Players of the Week. But any suggestions or requests, feel free to e-mail them or tweet me @StephenHaynes4.
And here we go...
Charlotte Gelfand, Friends Academy: She made 17 saves in a 3-2 win over East...Read more »
Getting tired of CHSAA finals between St. Anthony’s and Chaminade? Too bad. The two rivals will go head-to-head in a championship match in a seventh varsity sport this season on Monday, when they square off in the CHSAA tennis final at Hofstra. St. Anthony’s, the No. 1 seed led by defending CHSAA singles champion John D'Alessandro, went undefeated in league play and knocked off No. 4 Kellenberg...Read more »
The success of any hockey team starts with the goaltender, and for St. Anthony's this season, Daniel Peterson was no exception.
Just try telling that to him.
The senior netminder went 10-1-1 allowing just 13 goals in 12 regular season games with four shutouts, and continued to shut teams down throughout the CHSHL playoffs as he led the Friars to a second consecutive league championship.
But...Read more »
