Some shakeup in our rankings this week after Ward Melville belted Smithtown West on Monday, 13-4. West Islip isn’t done yet, either, as its 7-6 comeback victory over previously unbeaten Northport demonstrated. Sayville also suffered its first loss last week and has a big game at Comswewogue on Thursday night.

Bellport baseball coach Bill Batewell has been a winner wherever he’s gone. Between the 30 years he spent at Sachem and the last six at the helm at Bellport, Batewell has now won 500 career games after the Clippers beat West Babylon, 6-1, Thursday, making Batewell the sixth baseball coach in Suffolk history to reach the 500-win mark. You can’t put a price on earning the respect of your opponents and piers. Hauppauge’s Julie Williams and Herricks’ Alison Ricchiuti were happy to learn that this season. For the first time in nearly 30 years, Long Island public high school hockey will have a true No. 1 team.
