Mary Cain, Bronxville track phenom, shatters another record
It seems as though Mary Cain, the teen track sensation from Bronxville, breaks another record every time she runs. Saturday was no different.
Running against top professional and college runners at the Occidental High Performance meet in Occidental, Calif., Cain, 17, finished in second place in the 1,500-meter run.
Her time of 4 minutes, 4.62 seconds shattered her own previous U.S. high school record of 4:10.77. No other high school athlete has run faster than 4:14.50.
In fact, Cain’s time would be the second-fastest ever run on the college level.
And she still has one year left at Bronxville High School.
Cain, who is coached by marathon great Alberto Salazar, lost to Katie Mackey, a 25-year-old pro, by two-hundredths of a second.
"I don't really think about times. I think about competing," Cain told RunnerSpace.com after her event. "With 300 (meters) to go, I think it was great that I don't think about times because for all I knew, we were going five-minute mile pace."
