Northport's Gilroy commits to Florida for lacrosse

Northport junior Shannon Gilroy, Long Island's leading girls lacrosse scorer in 2009 with 113 goals, has verbally committed to the University of Florida. The All-America attack, who scored the tying and winning goals in the Tigers' 14-13 win over West Islip in the Suffolk Class A final on June 3, was also considering North Carolina and Maryland.

"The surroundings, the coach and the team were amazing," said Gilroy, who informed coach Amanda O'Leary of her decision Monday night. "I tried to pick a school that fit me personality wise. I couldn't get my mind off Florida the first time I visited."

The 2010 season will be the Florida women's lacrosse program's first as a varsity sport. The Gators' roster includes Farmingdale's Janine Hillier and Katie Ciaci, who was Gilroy's teammate at Northport, among its 24 freshmen.

Hillier, Ciaci and Gilroy were all members of Newsday's All-Long Island team earlier this year.
