This week on LI Softball Weekly for MSG Varsity we discussed a speedster in Babylon, an ace in Plainedge, two young, top CHSAA hurlers and a surprise in West Babylon.

(1) Christine Desiderio, Babylon. She's a great hitter (18-for-33), but her real asset comes on the base paths. Last year she stole 43 bags (yes, you read that right) and she's already swiped 14 in 11 games this year. She has 20+ runs and RBIs this season too, and has played second base, centerfield, catcher and pitcher (4-0, 1.22 ERA with 21 Ks and three walks in 23 innings).

(2) Michele Daubman, Plainedge. She's pitched a no-hitter, one-hitter and three two-hitters already this year as her record has zoomed to 11-1. She's given up more than one run just four times, so this is clearly an example of someone who 43 feet hasn't hurt.

(3) Aside from losses to CHSAA surprise team Kellenberg, St. Anthony's has been on fire this year, and there's no bigger reason for that than it's two young pitchers, sophomore Michelle Carbone and freshman Aileen Reilly. Carbone pitched the Friars all the way to the CHSAA title game last year, and now she's sharing the load with the equally talented Reilly.

(4) West Babylon is making noise again in League IV. Three years after winning a state Class AA title, Chelsea Shea may no longer be around, but Taylor Webb is filling her spikes nicely in her second full year as a starter. Webb has two no-hitters this season and allowed more than two runs just twice. Brianna Scotto and Melissa Frederick have been in the middle of things offensively for a team that's scored 87 runs in nine games.
