The Suffolk Scene: race for League I
Hopefully this will be a regular feature throughout the year, but for now we'll start it up in order with League I (image at the top is of Commack second baseman Nicole Hagenah):
Standings as of 4:30 p.m. on 4/22:
1. Commack (9-1, 9-1)
2. Sachem East (8-2, 7-2)
3. William Floyd (5-5, 5-4)
4. Longwood (6-4, 5-4)
5. Patchogue-Medford (4-5, 4-5)
6. Ward Melville (2-7, 2-7)
7. Brentwood (0-9, 0-9)
Commack (9-1, 9-1) and Sachem East (8-2, 7-2) have separated themselves from the rest of the pack right now. With the loss of Julia DeCarmine to graduation, Sachem East appeared weaker this year, but Lindsey Treanor has been excellent. As well, Commack has benefited from the move to League I and has not disappointed with its core of pitcher Michele Andrews and second baseman Nicole Hagenah. Commack has outscored its opponents 89-to-23 (+66 runs), while Sachem East has outscored teams 77-to-12 (+65 runs).
Commack’s only loss this year has been to Bay Shore, while Sachem East has lost to both Bay Shore and Commack.
Commack seems to be the smart pick at the moment, but Sachem East has done a better job of limiting runs, which will be huge in the playoffs.
