Newsday's look at the top 100 high school softball players on Long Island for the 2014 season, listed in alphabetical order.
OLIVIA AGOSTINELLO, Oyster Bay, 3B/P, Senior: Dangerous at the plate and in the circle. Hit .419 with 10 RBIs and went 2-2 with a 1.67 ERA last season.
STEFANIE APLIN, Smithtown East, C, Senior: Last yea`r, she batted .435 with a .535 OBP. She's a line-drive hitter with an exceptional eye and tremendous defensive skills behind the plate.
ALEXIS ALVINO, Division, C, Junior: Power hitter in the cleanup spot, hit .380 with five home runs and 19 RBIs. Verbally committed to Coastal Carolina.
KALY ALZATE, Bay Shore, 3B, Sophomore: One of the most powerful hitters in Suffolk. Will hit in the cleanup spot for arguably Long Island's most storied program.
KRISTEN ANDREWS, Commack, P, Senior: A three-year starter who recorded a 1.78 ERA last season and a 7-2 record. Will be attending Hartford in the fall.
KRISTEN ARBITER, MacArthur, C, Senior: A line-drive hitter with power to all fields who will plate plenty of runs. Bound for St. Joseph's.
ALANNAH BASILE, Island Trees, P, Senior: Seton Hall-bound pitcher, with a full arsenal of pitches, went 14-5 with a 2.79 ERA and 171 strikeouts while leading the Bulldogs to a county championship.
LAUREN BUTURLA, Hauppauge, P, Senior: Strong drop and curve, works down in the zone, ground-ball outs, ahead in the count, hits her spots and easy outs. Will pitch at St. Joseph's.
KRISTEN BRICKER, Sayville, 1B, Senior: Power hitter with a great arm. She hit .494 last season with seven home runs, 13 doubles and three triples.
TARA BYRNES, Huntington, C, Junior: A power-hitting catcher who can use all fields. Batted .600 last season with six home runs.
ALEX CAPRARIELLO, Port Washington, P, Senior: She only lost one game last season. Also a strong hitter, 14 of her 19 hits last season were for extra bases, including four homers.
TORI CARLO, Miller Place, SS, Senior: The Queens College-bound leadoff batter is a fast base-runner and agile shortstop who controls the infield. She batted .368 last season with 31 runs scored.
FRANCESCA CASALINO, Half Hollow Hills West, P, Senior: Bound for Yale, the first-team All-Long Island selection went 16-5 last season with a 0.75 ERA and led Suffolk in strikeouts with 240.
JACKIE CHESTER, Eastport-South Manor, 3B, Junior: Great arm at third. Power hitter who puts the ball in play and drives in a lot of runs.
CHRISTIE CIARAMITARO, Island Trees, RF, Junior: A slap hitter with great speed who bats atop the lineup for the defending county champs. Hit .484 with nine stolen bases and 29 runs scored.
SARAH CORNELL, Clarke, P, Sophomore: A power pitcher who can change speeds to keep batters off balance. Has thrown five career no-hitters and has 493 strikeouts thus far.
TAYLOR CURRAN, Plainedge, C, Senior: Strong arm behind the plate, doesn't allow much to get behind her. She has speed and agility on the basepaths and is clutch at the plate.
KAITLYN DAVIS, Carle Place, P, Senior: A consistent hitter and a smart runner who uses her outside fastball as her token pitch. She'll be attending Geneseo in the fall.
MARISSA DELAURENTIS, St. John the Baptist, CF, Junior: Tremendous arm and great range in the outfield. A cleanup hitter who hits for power and has speed on the bases.
ALISHA DOVICSAK, Comsewogue, C, Senior: Has a cannon of an arm behind the plate. Powerful batter who can drive the ball to any part of the field, hit .395 last season.
HOLLY DRASSER, Mt. Sinai, P, Senior: Led county with a .655 batting average and also hit five home runs and drove in 31 RBIs. A movement pitcher with a great rise, drop screw and drop curve. Bound for Geneseo.
SARAH EDWARDS, Bay Shore, C/1B, Senior: Bound for Buffalo, hit .422, with a .458 on-base percentage and a .578 slugging percentage last year. Great hands and quick feet at first base.
KATHRYN EILER, Kellenberg, C, Senior: A tremendous pitch caller with an ability to throw base runners out. Bound for Mount St. Mary College.
SOFIA EVANGELISTA, St. John the Baptist, P, Senior: The reigning CSHAA Pitcher of the Year went 11-3 with a 1.20 ERA. Opponents hit just .121 off of her. She has committed to NYIT.
STEPHANIE FALISI, Riverhead, 3B, Senior: Powerful slugger who recorded a .419 last season with a .645 OBP. She scored 17 runs, drove in 14 and hit two home runs.
TAYLOR FAY, St. John the Baptist, SS, Junior: The number-two batter has great range defensively and isn't afraid to dive for the ball. She can hit for power and has speed around the bases.
KATE FINNEN, Plainedge, SS, Senior: Great range and arm at short. She can lay down the bunt or drive the ball to the outfield. Bound for Stevenson College.
GEENA FORNATARO, New Hyde Park, P, Junior: A power pitcher with a nice fastball who works in a rise, drop and change. Also hit .454 and hit four home runs last season.
EMILY GAETA, Massapequa, 1B/3B, Senior: Strong arm and great range at the hot corner, hits for power and brings home runners in the cleanup spot.
NINA GAITA, Eastport-South Manor, CF, Senior: Great range in center, and versatile lefty hitter who can slap, bunt and hit for power.
JEN GIAMBRONE, Long Island Lutheran, 3B, Senior: A line-drive and power hitter who batted .516 with six home runs, 36 RBIs and 36 runs scored.
KASEY GILBRIDE, Pierson, SS, Senior: She has incredible speed and range defensively and is extremely aggressive on the base paths. Led Pierson to a Class C Long Island championship.
KIM GOLDSMITH, Bay Shore, P, Junior: Throws in the upper 50s but keeps hitters off balance with a strong curve and change-up.
KAITLYN GORMAN, Sacred Heart, SS, Senior: A contact hitter at the plate and one of the fastest players in the Catholic league. Hit. 560 last season and only made two errors all year.
COURTNEY GREENE, East Islip, P, Fr.: As an eighth grader last year, she struck out 99 batters in 119 innings with a 3.12 ERA. A hard-throwing lefty with a curve, drop, change, screw and riser.
JACLYN HAHN, Bayport-Blue Point, SS, Senior: The four-year starter batted .493 last year with 33 hits, 27 RBIs and 20 runs scored. She will be attending LIU Post in the fall.
ALI HARNED, East Hampton, SS, Junior: She has a powerful bat and led her team in runs last season with 27. She batted .422 with three homers.
KRISTEN HICKEY, New Hyde Park, 1B, Senior: Always a threat to go deep, she hit .571 and had a .609 on-base percentage in 2013.
LAUREN HILL, Farmingdale, CF, Junior: Excellent centerfielder who is a strong contact hitter with speed. Last year she batted .400 with a .469 OBP.
RACHEL HIRSCHHEIMER, Jericho, P, Sophomore: Can throw a strikeout and has a variety of pitches up her sleeve.
NICOLE IMHOF, Calhoun, P, Sophomore: She batted .553 with three home runs and 16 RBIs. The left-handed pitcher throws a variety of pitches.
PAIGE JULICH, Kings Park, P, Senior: A power-hitter who hit .400 last year with a .757 slugging percentage. She drove in 23 runs and hit five home runs.
VANESSA JUENGERKES, Islip, P, Senior: Dowling-bound lefty who puts a lot of movement on her pitches. Hit .596 last season and is always a threat to go deep or to steal a base.
OLIVIA KACZMAREK, Sayville, C, Junior: Blocks everything behind the plate and runners barely attempt to run on her because of her arm. Helped Sayville advance to the state final last season.
KIERSTEN KELLY, MacArthur, OF/1B, Senior: A line-drive hitter who is a tough out, she drove in 15 runs last season. Covers plenty of ground in right and tracks the ball beautifully off the bat.
ANNIE KENNEDY, Rocky Point, P/1B/SS, Senior: A power-hitter who hit .453 last season, highlighted by her winning home run in the first round of the playoffs against Islip.
KRISTA KING, Kellenberg, 2B, Senior A multi-dimensional player at the plate who hit .455 with 20 RBIs and 20 runs scored. Only made one error in the field last season. Bound for Adelphi.
KELSEY LARSON, Long Beach, SS, Senior: Last year she batted .333 with a .459 OBP. She's a gap-hitter who hits for power and is a strong defensive player with great range.
TIA LAPUMA, Centereach, 1B, Senior: A gap hitter with pop. Now in her fifth year on varsity, she's on pace to break multiple offensive records at Centereach this season.
TAYLOR LUDEWIG, Miller Place, CF, Junior: She batted .495, recorded a .691 slugging percentage and struck out twice in 94 plate appearances.
BRIANA MANISCALCO, St. Dominic, P/2B, Junior: Throws a nasty curveball and screwball. She also has a strong arm in the field and is a line-drive hitter at the plate.
BRITTANY MAHAN, Shoreham-Wading River, SS, Senior: A speedy shortstop who batted .525 last season, including 31 RBIs. She will be attending Hillsdale College in the fall.
SAMANTHA MARRONE, Sachem East, C, Junior: LIU Post-bound leadoff batter had a .550 average last season and covers a ton of ground in centerfield.
AMANDA MASCIA, Hicksville, 2B, Senior: Dangerous at the plate. Can hit to any section of the field. Quick and agile infielder.
SAM MASELLI, South Side, P, Senior: A power pitcher with accuracy who works the plate and throws a great change-up. Also an aggressive base runner.
ASHLEY MASSONI, MacArthur, P, Senior: Went 12-7 with 122 strikeouts last season while leading the Generals to the county final. Bound for Salisbury.
ALYSE MCALPINE, Half Hollow Hills West, 2B, Sophomore: Great range at second and a line-drive contact hitter who hit .300 as a freshman.
ERIN MCCARTHY, Lindenhurst, SS/C, Senior: On the verge of breaking numerous records for the Bulldogs, she hit .515 last season.
CLAIRE MCNAMARA, Oceanside, SS, Junior: Excellent range, arm and instincts at shortstop. Also a tough out atop the lineup for the Sailors' order.
LEAH MELE, Longwood, 2B, Senior: Helped lead Longwood to its first county title last season. She batted .411 with 10 doubles, two triples, one home run, 14 RBIs and 37 runs. Also had a fielding percentage of .926.
ASHLEY MELENDEZ, Island Trees, 1B/P, Junior: Cleanup hitter with pop for the county champion Bulldogs. Led the team in home runs with five and RBIs with 33.
ALYSSA MONTEVERDE, West Islip, P, Senior: A power pitcher who throws a mean curveball. Last year, she had a 1.60 ERA and 145 strikeouts
BERNADETTE MULLANE, Holy Trinity, 1B, Senior: She can play first base, shortstop and catcher. Mullane is a power-hitter who will be batting in the fourth spot.
DANIELLE NENDZA, Bethpage, SS, Senior: Great speed and range, plus a powerful arm. Made a diving catch that led to a triple play. She will be attending South Florida in the fall.
SAM PERRI, Floral Park, SS, Junior: Last year, she hit .500 with two home runs, 17 RBIs and five stolen bases. Tracked down everything in center but shifts to shortstop for her junior season.
LAUREN PETERSEN, Bayport-Blue Point, 3B, Senior: A tough out who can hit to all fields and is a threat on the base paths. Last season she hit .521 with 38 hits. Will attend Fairfield in the fall.
JULIETTE POLIS, East Islip, CF, Senior: Plenty of speed on the bases and in center. Can either bunt, slap or hit for power, she hit .406 last season.
JESSICA PULIS, Baldwin, P/CF, Senior: She had 25 career victories and a .482 batting average coming into this season. Pulis is a control pitcher who hits her sports and throws a great changeup.
KELLY RASULO, Kellenberg, 3B, Sophomore: An up-and-coming power hitter with fast hands and very good plate coverage. Can hit all pitches.
CHRISTINA RAYFIELD, Commack, SS, Junior: The League I Rookie of the Year last season is a power-hitter who can hit the ball anywhere. Last year she batted .428.
AILEEN REILLY, St. Anthony's, P, Senior: Gettysburg-bound power pitcher with great movement and command. Last year, she struck out 107 in 82 innings with a 1.37 ERA. Hit .444 last season.
CHRISTINE RIZZACASA, Mepham, IF/OF, Senior: A gap hitter with tremendous speed who made no errors last season. Bound for NYIT, she hit .392 with 18 RBIs.
MARISA RIZZI, Eastport-South Manor, P, Sophomore: Throws hard in the circle, hits with power at the plate, runs with speed on the bases.
SELENA RUIZ, Clarke, C, Junior: Strong arm and quick release. She's a great bunter, slapper and can hit for power. She led the team last year in doubles, triple and home runs.
ALEXA RUSSELL, Kellenberg, SS, Sophomore: A gap hitter who hits for average and is clutch with runners in scoring position. Quick feet, good range, strong arm at short.
ALEX RUSSO, Longwood, C, Senior: Molloy-bound leader who orchestrates the infield and calls the pitches for every game. She's the cleanup hitter and last year recorded 27 RBIs.
ANGELA SCHULER, Connetquot, C, Junior: Muhlenberg-bound catcher has speed, a powerful arm and is a power hitter. Hit .517, had a .759 slugging percentage and drove in 12 runs last season.
BRIANNA SCHIPPELL, Valley Stream South, SS, Sophomore: A power hitter who knows how to rack up the RBIs.
VAL SCURA, Newfield, CF/SS, Senior: She is a switch-hitting power hitter who will find the gaps. She also has great range in the field.
RACHEL SIEBER, Massapequa, SS, Senior: One of the county's best defensive shortstops, also a great contact hitter atop the lineup. Bound for Fairfield.
KERRI SHAPIRO, East Meadow, P, Senior: Power pitcher who can throw up to 62 mph. At the plate last season she hit .477 with seven home runs and 33 RBIs while guiding the Jets to a Long Island championship.
EMILY SKUPP, Mineola, P, Sophomore: She can spot the ball well, can throw any pitch for a strike and has a knockout changeup.
CIERRA SMITH, Center Moriches, SS, Sophomore: She's a versatile defender with speed and a strong arm. Last year she batted .522 with 33 hits and four home runs.
MARISSA SMITH, Sachem East, P, Junior: She knows how to change speed and can throw a variety of pitches. She has already committed to Ithaca College.
KAITLYN SNYDER, Hauppauge, SS, Junior: A five-tool player who hits for power and average. Last year, she hit .464 with five home runs and 27 RBIs out of the leadoff spot.
LAUREN SUSTAD, Bellmore JFK, CF, Junior: Hartford-bound slugger hit .529 with 16 runs and 12 stolen bases last season. She has great speed and arm strength.
ERIN SWEENEY, Connetquot, P, Junior: A location pitcher with a knockout curveball who went 12-5 with a 1.78 ERA last season. She's also a line-drive hitter who hit .370 with 11 RBIs.
CLAIRE TRAVIS, East Meadow, OF, Senior: A fast, aggressive baserunner who has terrific range and a top-notch arm. Last year she batted .429 with five stolen bases.
LAUREN TRIMARCO, Calhoun, P, Junior: She has a laser arm at shortstop and takes the mound with a full arsenal of pitches. Also hit for a .488 average last season.
JENNA TURATO, Carey, P, Junior: A rise-ball power pitcher with fantastic control who commands the strike zone. She throws multiple pitches, including a curveball and screwball. Last season, her ERA was 1.28.
CATHERINE VAUGHAN, Hauppauge, CF, Sophomore: Nicknamed "The Freak" because of her raw power. Drove in 18 runs and stole 16 bases last year and covers a lot of ground in center.
TONIMARIE VALERIANO, Mepham, P, Senior: The Nassau County pitcher of the year and first-team Newsday All-Long Island selection hits her spots, moves the ball and has a nasty screwball. Will play at Queens College.
SAMANTHA VAN DORN, Patchogue-Medford, P, Junior: A strikeout pitcher who mixes her pitches, locates the ball and keeps hitters off balance.
AMY VITHA, Hewlett, SS, Senior: She is an experienced player with speed and agility in the infield. She has a big bat and hit .417 last season.
CASEY WALEKO, East Hampton, P, Senior: She recorded four shutouts last year and will be back with great strength, speed and agile movement.
DANIELLE WARNKEN, Bayport-Blue Point, C, Senior: A four-year starter with a solid bat. Last year she hit .415 with 24 RBIs and 25 runs scored.
SYDNEY WITOWSKI, Malverne, P, Junior: She throws with power and struck out 128 batters last season. She's also the cleanup hitter for the Mules.
MADISON WEST, East Meadow, C, Senior: She has good presence and a quick release behind the plate. Last year she hit .393 with three home runs and 24 RBIs.
DOM ZUMMO, St. Anthony's, CF, Senior: Great arm and a leadoff hitter with speed and fantastic range. She's a gap hitter who can hit doubles and triples. She's committed to Plattsburgh.
DANIELLE ZUREK, Syosset, P, Senior: Zurek locates her pitches very well and changes pace to keep hitters off balance.
