The No. 2-ranked team in the country, featuring three NCAA D-I defensemen, improved to 3-0 with a 13-6 victory over Fairfield College Prep. Ryan Lukacovic scored four goals with two assists. Up next: Round 1 of the annual three-game series with rival St. Anthony's at Mineola on Wednesday.

The Friars' hopes of the No. 1 national ranking took a hit with Wednesday's 13-12 upset loss to Florida power Vero Beach, a day after St. Anthony's trounced Martin County (Fla.), 16-1. Still, the Friars remain Long Island's best team until proven otherwise.

3. KELLENBERG SOFTBALL

The defending state champs picked up right where they left off. In their season opener they had a 4-3 win over Nassau power East Meadow. New ace Sabrina DeAngelis allowed two runs with six strikeouts and Kathryn Eiler hit the go-ahead two-run double in the fifth.

4. MANHASSET GIRLS LACROSSE

The Indians' play, thus far, has matched the preseason hype. Manhasset has dominated in each of its three games, the closest of which was a 14-7 victory over Chatham (N.J.), a team ranked No. 7 in the country last season. They'll continue to be tested this week with Wantagh and Garden City on the schedule.

5. CHAMINADE BASEBALL

Brendan Spagnuolo picked up two wins in relief and Rob Vani hit a two-run home run in the 8th inning of a 2-0 win against CHSAA rival St. John the Baptist. The Flyers beat St. Anthony's behind righty Jim McCarty.

6. BAY SHORE GIRLS LACROSSE

The defending Long Island Class A champions survived a scare against Hauppauge (Katie Kirk's goal won it for the Marauders in the fifth overtime), and defeated Smithtown East, 11-9, to remain undefeated.

7. BAY SHORE SOFTBALL

The Marauders have what is arguably the Island's best batterymates in catcher Courtney Syrett and pitcher Michelle DeVito, both of whom were first-team All-Long Island selections as juniors. They are off to a 2-0 start.

8. HALF HOLLOW HILLS GIRLS BADMINTON

The Thundercolts defeated Smithtown West 7-2 and Whitman 8-1 to up their win-streak to 47 straight matches. Liana He won her fifth singles match 11-0, 11-0 against Smithtown and Gina Augusta and Carly Cordano won their first doubles match 15-6, 15-0 against Whitman.

9. SMITHTOWN EAST GIRLS GOLF

The Bulls defeated Half Hollow Hills West, 9-0. Freshman Peyton Greco shot a five-over 37 at Dix Hills Park to lead the way. Smithtown East went 14-0 and won its first Long Island Championship last year. The Bulls also won their second straight Suffolk Championship with a county-record score of 882.

10. ST. ANTHONY'S BOYS LACROSSE

The Friars were beaten by New Jersey powerhouse Delbarton, 7-4, but will be primed for its showdown with CHSAA rival Chaminade this week. The Flyers won both regular-season meetings last year, but the Friars won in the CHSAA title game.
