Maloney campaign releases poll claiming 'dead heat'
Democratic challenger Sean Patrick Maloney's campaign released a poll on Friday showing him neck and neck with incumbent Republican Congresswoman Nan Hayworth in the nationally watched 18th Congressional District race.
The poll of 602 likely voters, conducted Sept. 19-20 by Public Policy Polling and commissioned by the New York State AFL-CIO -- which is backing Maloney's campaign -- showed each candidate is supported by 43 percent of likely voters, with the remaining 14 percent undecided.
Maloney's campaign spokeswoman Evangeline George said in a news release that the poll shows the race is a "dead heat."
“Tea party Congresswoman Nan Hayworth voted to end Medicare and defund Planned Parenthood — and Hudson Valley voters aren’t happy about it,” George said.
The partisan poll comes one week after a Siena College poll -- the only independent poll in the race to date -- showed Hayworth with a 13-point lead over Maloney.
In a statement, Hayworth's campaign dismissed the poll results.
"Even a cursory look at the details of this AFL-CIO poll reveal it to be the joke that it is," said Michael Knowles, Hayworth's campaign spokesman. "Just one week after the only nonpartisan poll to be commissioned puts Congresswoman Hayworth ahead of Sean Maloney by 13 points, one of Mr. Maloney's largest backers is suggesting that the race is a tie. Par for the course to a campaign running on lies."
