Step onto the mat with Newsday's high school writers as they cover Long Island wrestling.

The Island's Top-Five Wrestlers, No. 5: Jose Rodriguez

Today is the first part of a five-entry installment counting down Long Island's five best wrestlers, regardless of weight.

With the wealth of talented wrestlers spread throughout the Island, trimming the list to five was anything but a simple task.

Without further adieu...

No. 5: Jose Rodriguez

Grade: 9th

School: Wantagh

Weight: 99

Record: 37-0

The youngest and lightest wrestler on the list, Rodriguez  was the sparkplug behind the Warriors' Nassau Dual Meet championship run. He has 21 pins, and with a two-point win over Long Beach's Steven Sewkumar last month, has shown he can beat top-flight competition. As an eighth-grader last year, he finished fourth at the county championship. This year, the fabulous freshman is the favorite to win it all.
