St. Anthony's had nine wrestlers at the state tournament, but it took until the final match of the semifinals for the Friars to get a state finalists. Jonathan Desir took down Nassau Champion and previously undefeated David NG (46-1) of Plainedge to advance to the championship against New Rochelle's Malcolm Allen.

St. Anthony's 135-pound junior Jamel Hudson got things started at Day 2 of the State Championships at the Times Union Center with a stirring rendition of the Star Spangled Banner.

The Division I wild card berths were announced for next Friday-Saturday's NYSPHSAA Championships at the Times-Union Center in Albany. Four wild cards in each weight-class are given to wrestlers throughout the state who failed to win their section. Some of the wild cards were obvious choices (see Gomez, Alex) while others, I'm sure, required more deliberation from the selection committee....Read more »
Huntington 119-pound ace Nigel McNeil takes a 68-bout winning streak into Saturday's League V tournament at Kings Park. The defending state champ last lost in a 2009 Suffolk County tourney semifinal.
He won his consolation match in 2009, went 38-0 in 2010 and is 29-0 thus far in 2010-11.
If McNeil wins Saturday's matches, the streak moves to 71.

Four Long Island wrestlers — Huntington's Damon McQueen (119 pounds) and Ryan Fox (160), Syosset's Nick Arujau (125), Central Islip's Andy Rodriguez (145) — have been selected to participate in the 36th annual Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic on Saturday at the University of Pittsburgh's Fitzgerald Field House.

Glenn remains the top team in our Big 10 (ahead of the Half Hollow Hills boys basketball team for the seventh straight week) after it crowned its first state champion — 130-pounder Nick Meinsen (pictured) — at the Times Union Center in Albany on Saturday. Nick Terdick placed third at 152 pounds for the Knights.

In a rematch of the 152-pound Suffolk final, Islip's Kyle Wade exacted revenge in a surprising fashion, pinning Glenn's Nick Terdick in 2:46.
Wade, who was leading 2-0 at the time, went in on a deep shot and Terdick tried reaching over Wade's back to grab his ankle and cause a stalemate.

Day 2 has started off with a bang.
At 96 pounds, Mark West of Hauppauge, the Suffolk champ, narrowly edged Nassau champ Mark Raghunandan of Long Beach, 7-2.
Then at 103, it was the Soria brothers' turn. Mike Soria (pictured) won his wrestleback 6-0 of Fox Lane's Sam Speno. But in the semifinals, Max was pinned by Wayne's Al Dierna.

Rocky Point came to the state tournament with three No. 1 seeds and all three have advanced to tomorrow's semifinals.
